Characteristics
The Ferrata Angelino is an easy itinerary located in the Swiss territory, 30 minutes from the Chiasso barrier. The itinerary has an approach of about 2 hours and the via ferrata allows you to go up the crest of Monte Generoso. The via ferrata does not have difficult sections even if 3 sections can be defined as medium difficulty compared to the rest of the easy route.
Approach
The starting point of the itinerary is near Mendrisio, 30 minutes by car over the border with Switzerland at the Chiasso barrier. Once in Mendrisio, one must reach the Trattoria Peonia where there is a large car park (for a fee - bring coins).
Approach
Follow the dirt road that enters the woods until you reach the Bellavista train stop (1223 m). From here continue initially along the railway then along the hillside to the train arrival station (1600 m). From the station, follow the signs for the top of Monte Generoso. Shortly before reaching the summit, follow the signs towards Lanzo d'Intelvi (Via Variante) which run along the north side of Monte Generoso until reaching the start of the Ferrata Angelino (1h30min from the parking lot).
The via ferrata begins with a short ledge to the right that leads us to a short slightly overhanging staircase that deposits us on a small terrace. At this point we go down a couple of meters with the help of a chain and we reach a second ladder, longer than the first. At the end of the ladder, you immediately see a second ladder to be taken with an exposed horizontal traverse in the middle in which you must proceed in adherence. We go up the third staircase and we begin a stretch of easy ridge path with the rope that often acts as a handrail. We then come to a dihedral to be climbed using both the artificial and natural holds. You pass some rocks and continue along the easy stepped path up to a short vertical wall where you can climb it and then cross a suspended wooden bridge. We are now near the cross of the forerunner (1694 m) that we will cross. We initially continue going down a few meters and then along the aided path we complete the climb to the top (1704 m - 30 'from the start).
Exit
Descend the obvious path towards the train station and from there backwards along the outward path (1h from the top).
Interesting facts
The Ferrata Angelino is an easy via ferrata, with a couple of slightly more challenging passages (overhanging initial staircase, traverse between the two stairs, dihedral) which, however, can also be considered a good baptism for new hikers, ideally accompanied by someone more experienced.
