Characteristics

The hammer - in the truest sense of the word! A huge overhang to which climbing holds and a steel rope have been attached, thus one of the most difficult via ferratas in Austria has been created. But beware - only aspirants who are physically up to the task should attempt the Gosauschmied Hammer (the working title of the builders was "Ambos"). In addition to good arm strength, you also need the necessary body tension to climb this huge overhang. Via ferrata climbers with good sport climbing experience are of course at an advantage.

Arrival

From the west: Take the A10 to Golling, continue on the B162 and B166 to Gosau. There turn right and drive through the Gosau valley to Gasthof Gosauschmied.

From the east: Take the A1 to Regau, continue on the B145 and B166 to Gosau. At the turn-off drive straight ahead into the Gosautal; the main road leads to the right.

Approach

From the parking lot at the Gasthof Gosauschmied (a recommended stop!) head into the valley in the direction of the via ferrata. At the first junction turn left uphill, then immediately right again to a water reservoir (made of concrete) under the rock face. There left a little uphill to the entrance (you can already see the grips on the large roof).

Exit

From the exit it is best to continue left along the easy (C) Kletttersteig to a band, there you can descend to the Schmiedsteig and use the emergency descent to the base of the wall (see topo).

Interesting facts

Problem: If you fall into the via ferrata set and the band fall damper breaks open, then you hang very far below the steel rope free in the air - only the fewest then come back up to the steel rope (possibly with prusiks, but this technique must be mastered and the slings must also be with you). If the band fall damper tears open, you no longer have a functioning via ferrata set.

- If you are unsure at the start, it is best to leave it off completely.

- An alternative would be a rope belay from above, but this is not easy to set up because of the large overhang (you need climbing experience on overhangs).

- It is best to go with Skylotec Rider or possibly Austrialpin Ferrata Bloc.
