Characteristics
Gran Sasso - limestone massif in the Abruzzo Apennines, which includes the highest peak of the Apennines, Corno Grande 2912 m - ferrata crossing.
The Vetta Orientale ferrata is at the remains of the glacier above the Carlo Franchetti hut to one of the two summits of the Corno Grande, this one being 9m lower, the 2903m Vetta Orientale.
Arrival
Prati di Tivo, car park in Valico del Laghetto saddle 1650 m or from the other side of the car park at Campo Imperiale 2130 m
Onset
From the Carlo Franchetti hut to the Passo del Cannone saddle and around the glacier to the start.
The second option is to go from the other side (our route) from the parking lot at Campo Imperiale 2130m.a.s.l. via the Sella del Brecciaio saddle (2506 m) and via ferrata Passo del Cannone (B) around the glacier to the ascent
Descent
With the same via ferrata (downwards it is called Ghiacciaio del Calderone), a secondary marked unsecured climbing route of difficulty I-II UIAA or via via ferrata Ricci.
Interesting facts
This via ferrata has a second return option called Ghiacciaio del Calderone.
